Rectal Bleeding
Gut & DigestiveIf this is an emergency, call 911 now. This tool is for general information, not emergency guidance. If you're having severe symptoms, don't read this — get help.
What the internet says
Colorectal cancer. Rectal cancer. Inflammatory bowel disease. Intestinal ischemia.
What it probably actually is
Hemorrhoids (affects 75% of people at some point). Anal fissure from straining or hard stool. Small polyp that's bleeding but not dangerous. Vigorous exercise.
🧠 The full picture
Bright red blood on the toilet paper or in the bowl after a hard stool is almost always hemorrhoids or a fissure. Dark, tarry stool is different — that suggests bleeding higher up in the GI tract and is more significant. Context, color, and consistency all matter.
⚠️ When to actually call your doctor
These are real red flags. If any of these apply, don't wait.
- Dark, tarry, or maroon-colored stool (not bright red)
- Significant blood — more than just streaks
- Accompanied by weight loss or change in bowel habits
- Over 45 and not had a recent colonoscopy
- Persists beyond a week or keeps recurring
- Abdominal pain with the bleeding
