Chest Pain

Heart & Circulation
What the internet says

Heart attack. Pulmonary embolism. Aortic dissection. Angina. Pericarditis. Possibly a rare parasitic infection.

What it probably actually is

Muscle strain from poor posture, acid reflux or heartburn, anxiety (very common — anxiety chest pain is real and physically uncomfortable), costochondritis (rib cartilage inflammation from coughing or exercise), or sleeping on your side awkwardly.

🧠 The full picture

The vast majority of chest pain in people under 65 without risk factors is musculoskeletal or GI-related. Heartburn alone accounts for a huge proportion of ER visits for "chest pain." Your chest has a lot of moving parts — ribs, cartilage, muscles, your esophagus running right through it. Most chest sensations are not your heart.

⚠️ When to actually call your doctor

These are real red flags. If any of these apply, don't wait.

  • Pain radiates to your left arm, jaw, or shoulder
  • Accompanied by shortness of breath, sweating, or nausea together
  • Crushing or pressure sensation (not sharp or stabbing)
  • Lasts more than 15 minutes without relief
  • You have a known heart condition or multiple risk factors (diabetes, high BP, smoking)
  • Pain came on suddenly at maximum intensity
