How Shannen Doherty Manages Crohn's Disease

Crohn's Disease

Beverly Hills 90210 star Shannen Doherty lived with Crohn's disease for decades, revealing her diagnosis publicly during her appearance on Dancing with the Stars. She became an advocate for IBD awareness before her death from breast cancer in 2024.

"Crohn's isn't just stomach pain. It affects every aspect of your life โ€” work, relationships, everything."

โ€” Shannen Doherty, Dancing with the Stars interviews, 2010

Shannen Doherty, best known for her roles in Beverly Hills 90210 and Charmed, revealed her Crohn's disease diagnosis publicly during her appearance on Dancing with the Stars in 2010. She described living with the condition through much of her Hollywood career โ€” including during the years of peak fame and intense media scrutiny.

Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that can cause severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, and malnutrition. It is an unpredictable condition with periods of flares and remission that can be difficult to predict or control.

Doherty spoke about how the condition affected her ability to work and maintain relationships, and how she had to carefully manage diet, stress, and treatment to function at a high level professionally.

Beyond her IBD advocacy, Doherty later faced an even more serious health battle โ€” a breast cancer diagnosis in 2015, followed by recurrence in 2019 and a stage 4 diagnosis in 2020. She passed away in July 2024 at age 53. Throughout all of it, she demonstrated remarkable candor about living with serious illness in the public eye.
