How Mike McCready Manages Crohn's Disease

Crohn's Disease

Pearl Jam lead guitarist Mike McCready was diagnosed with Crohn's disease as a teenager and has maintained one of rock music's most demanding touring careers while managing the condition — becoming one of IBD's most authentic advocates.

"Crohn's disease tried to derail my career. I didn't let it. But it took everything I had."

— Mike McCready, Various interviews and CCFA events, 2000s–2020s

Mike McCready, the lead guitarist of Pearl Jam and one of rock music's most celebrated players, was first diagnosed with Crohn's disease as a teenager. Over the course of a career spanning more than three decades, he has maintained one of the most demanding touring schedules in rock music while managing a chronic, often debilitating illness.

McCready has spoken in depth about the physical challenges of touring with Crohn's disease — the unpredictable flares, the dietary challenges of life on the road, and the importance of having a medical team that understands the demands of his career.

He became a prominent advocate for the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA), using his platform to raise funds and awareness. In 2009, he was given the CCFA's Person of Distinction Award for his advocacy work.

McCready's openness about Crohn's disease has been particularly meaningful to fans and patients because it comes without the gloss of a sanitized celebrity health story. He has been frank about the hard parts — the pain, the fatigue, the fear of flares — in a way that resonates authentically with people living with IBD.

By the Numbers

Crohn's disease is most commonly diagnosed between ages 15 and 35, but can occur at any age. Many patients manage the condition for decades.
