How Kim Kardashian Manages Placenta Accreta & Retained Placenta

Placenta Accreta & Retained Placenta

Kim Kardashian publicly shared her diagnoses of retained placenta after her first delivery and placenta accreta during her second pregnancy — conditions requiring surgical intervention and making future pregnancies extremely high risk.

"My placenta attached to the scar from my C-section. I could have bled to death."

— Kim Kardashian, Blog posts and interviews, 2016–2019

Kim Kardashian has been unusually candid about her obstetric complications. After delivering North West in 2013, she had a retained placenta requiring manual removal. During her second pregnancy with Saint West, doctors identified placenta accreta — a condition where the placenta grows too deeply into the uterine wall — making the delivery extremely high-risk. Placenta accreta can cause life-threatening bleeding and often requires hysterectomy to save the mother's life. Because of these risks, her physicians advised against further pregnancies, and her third and fourth children were born via gestational carrier. Her willingness to discuss these complications publicly helped demystify conditions that are rarely discussed. Placenta accreta has become more common alongside rising C-section rates, as uterine scars increase the risk.

By the Numbers

Placenta accreta affects roughly 1 in 272 pregnancies. Its prevalence has risen sharply with increasing C-section rates.

You're not alone

Nearly 4 million babies are born in the U.S. each year. Complications affect 1 in 4 pregnancies. The U.S. has the highest maternal mortality rate among high-income nations.
