How Drew Carey Manages Type 2 Diabetes (reversed)

Type 2 Diabetes (reversed)

Comedian and The Price Is Right host Drew Carey reversed his Type 2 diabetes through dramatic weight loss, going from 262 lbs to around 157 lbs. His story offers hope that the condition can be put into remission with lifestyle change.

"I'm not diabetic anymore. No medication needed."

— Drew Carey, People magazine, 2010

Drew Carey, the comedian and host of The Price Is Right, made headlines in 2010 when he announced he had lost 80 pounds — and in doing so, reversed his Type 2 diabetes entirely. Speaking to People magazine, he said simply: "I'm not diabetic anymore."

Carey had been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes before his weight loss journey. After making dramatic changes to his diet — reportedly cutting out refined carbohydrates and processed foods — and increasing physical activity, his blood sugar levels normalized and his doctors took him off diabetes medication.

His story is notable because it illustrates that Type 2 diabetes can, in some cases, be put into remission through significant lifestyle changes — particularly substantial weight loss. The American Diabetes Association recognizes that for some people, achieving normal blood glucose levels through diet and exercise can represent a functional remission of the disease.

Carey's transformation inspired many people to take lifestyle change seriously as a potential path to managing — and in some cases reversing — Type 2 diabetes.

By the Numbers
